5 Incredible Works Of Airport Art

3 Nov 2020

For many travellers, the airport is the worst and most dreaded aspect of any journey.

Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, solo or with family, it can often be the most stressful part of your trip, leaving you with lots to remember and little time to stop and look around.

So its easy to miss the many works of art that are displayed throughout many airports. But large amounts of money are spent every year on decorative exhibitions to be seen by travellers from across the globe.

These are just five of the most impressive airport exhibitions from the past and present that prove it’s always worth looking around as you’re passing through – check them out!

#1. The Umbrella Project, Heathrow Airport (LHR)

The Umbrella Project was created to raise awareness for ADHD and autism, as well as related umbrella conditions such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.

And in late 2019, the commemorative creation was displayed in Terminal 5 of Heathrow airport. It took no fewer than 300 umbrellas to put together, along with a little help from Ormiston Wire, and remained there between June and October of that year.

#2. Auchentoshan Whiskey, Edinburgh Airport (EDI)

In October 2019, Auchentoshan whiskey distillery commissioned another unique exhibition which captured the imaginations of travellers.

The display was a lifelike, interactive 3D recreation of a bottle of Auchentoshan’s Dark Oak which celebrated the brand’s Glaswegian origins. It also featured images of the Golden Gate Bridge, The Shard and the Sydney Opera House.

Like the Umbrella Project, it was shown in the airport for only a limited time, but it inspired many passengers to get creative with photographs whilst it was there.

#3. Airport Museum, Athens International Airport (AIA)

Athens International Airport, the largest and busiest in Greece, is home to a remarkable assortment of artworks and artefacts gathered in its museum.

Its permanent collection contains 172 archaeological findings discovered locally, which date as far back as the Neolithic period, to the Early Helladic and Post-Byzantine eras.

It has been on display since 2003, and alongside its resident highlights is a revolving door of periodical exhibitions.

#4 & #5. Lamp Bear & SMALL LIE, Hamad International Airport (DOH)

Doha, Qatar is home to one of the most unusual and imaginative entries on this list.

Lamp Bear, created by Swedish artist Urs Fischer, depicts a gigantic bright yellow bear measuring 23ft, seated beneath a large lamp.

This whimsical creation, which sits in the grand foyer of the duty-free hall, is reminiscent for many of childhood, and a simpler time. Similarly, SMALL LIE by American artist KAWS, which depicts a 32ft tall marionette mouse made of Afrormosia wood, was influenced by its sculptor’s childhood affection for wooden toys and invokes nostalgia for many viewers.

These are just five incredible works of art that have been seen in airports around the world. Next time you’re flying, take a look around and see what you’re missing!
